Cancelling Your Hosting

So sorry to see you go! If you are closing up shop–for good or just for now–this will quickly give you an overview of what happens next and some things to consider.

Things to consider:

  • Your hosting price is ‘grandfathered’ in and the price you currently paying may be lower than another service. You can rebrand and/or change focus of your site–connect to talk about that possibility.
  • Your email service is connected to your hosting and your email will no longer work after your hosting account is deleted. I offer ‘Email Only’ hosting (that includes domain registration) and I can redirect the domain to wherever you want (ex., DBWS, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.) and you’ll have continuity with the brand you’ve built over the years. If you wish to keep email services through another provider (Google Apps, Microsoft 365), you need to move your domain first (see next bullet point) before you can add the records needed for those services.
  • If I am your domain registrar, your domain name likely expires on or about your cancellation, so you need to make advanced plans if you wish to keep it. In that case, I can help you move it. First, you would create an account with GoDaddy (or other domain registrar) and I will send you an Auth/EEP code you’ll need to move an existing domain. The code expires in 24 hours, so do all the steps up to needing the code and then request it. Since all DNS records will be erased after hosting is deleted, you need to have the domain moved first before purchasing email services.

Next Steps:

  • Open a ticket letting me know your intentions. If you are cancelling entirely let me know the earlier the better to turn off auto-billing and it won’t bill you accidentally (you will still have use of your site until the end of the billing period).
  • Make a backup of your WordPress installation to download (click here for instructions).
  • If you wish to keep your domain (and I’m your registrar), choose a registrar and create a free account. There will be an option to ‘move a domain’… email me for the Auth/EPP code. I will do the release immediately (but actual transfer make take several days).
