As you all know, this is my first year experimenting with container gardening. I have to admit that I have fallen in love with it. I check my plants every day, photo document their progress, and share the updates with my friends and family. Not only has it been fun but I have also found it therapeutic. It has given me something to focus my energies on and distract my mind. If you haven't tried organic gardening yourself yet, here are 7 reasons why you should start:
1. No additives. Your food is grown by you and you control what kind of fertilizers etc you use. You have the ability to grow pure, nutritious food.
2. No pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. You can avoid the toxic poisons you may get on supermarket produce and enjoy your naturally grown treats right from your own yard.
3. Avoid genetic modification. Nowadays, antibiotics, drugs and hormones are used on vegetables which can pose risks to our health. They also change the taste of many plants and therefore limit our ability to enjoy their natural flavours. By growing food yourself, you don't have to deal with this.
4. Better health. Your health is not put at risk like it may have been by consuming genetically modified and hormone added produce that you would get from the store.
5. Better taste. Like I mentioned, the food will taste better. Your diet can improve because you will be able to enjoy better tasting produce.
6. Eco-friendly. Since you are growing food chemical free, you are not damaging any soil or air components. You are just letting mother nature do her thing.
7. Contribute to the planet's sustainability. You might even be able to exchange food with family and friends therefore contributing to an eco-friendly and healthier planet.
Have I convinced you yet? Give organic gardening a try. You won't be disappointed.
PS: Happy Canada Day to my Canadian readers. I hope you have a blast.
