Where have you been?

Monday, April 12th, 2010

A few days ago I posted about my goal of 50 countries by 50. What I didn't mention at the time was where I have been. Below is a list of the countries I have visited:

  1. USA
  2. Mexico
  3. Cuba
  4. Dominican Republic
  5. England
  6. France
  7. Spain
  8. Germany
  9. Italy
  10. Monaco
  11. Switzerland
  12. Austria
  13. Holland
  14. Belgium
  15. Greece
  16. Liechtenstein
  17. Vatican City State
  18. Costa Rica
  19. Honduras
  20. El Salvador
  21. Nicaragua
  22. Guatemala
  23. Turkey
  24. Canada
My experiences in all of these countries has changed me in some way. By going on a low budget and staying in remote villages, I was able to interact more with locals and experience the true culture of each country.

So where have you traveled? What was your favourite place? Have a favourite story to share? What frugal travel techniques have you found work well?

50 Countries by 50

Monday, April 5th, 2010
Have you ever had a dream that would take your entire life to come true? Well I have. I have always wanted to travel to and explore 50 different countries by the time I am age 50. I love the rewards from traveling…the new perspective, the culinary explosion, the walk through history; travel makes me feel alive.

I was a fortunate youth because my parents took my brother and I on numerous trips. Every year we would go on at least one big family vacation. This helped me get started on this journey. By the time I was 18 I had been to 3 different countries. In my early adult years, I made traveling a priority. By the time I was 22 I had visited 14 more countries. Yes, I blitzed a bunch. A couple years later a few more got added to the list when I ran my first marathon overseas. That put my grand total to 19 countries.

This past year I got married and my husband and I went on an amazing honeymoon in Central America. This has now put my total at 24. I am almost half way there.

Reaching this goal is definitely something that I am not going to give up on but it will require definite planning. My husband wants to work with me as a team to make this happen but we have made one condition that must be met…that we continue to travel as frugal as possible. This means finding the best deals for accommodations, airfare, attractions, etc.

With this in mind we have already started planning our trip for 2011. The destination is still to be determined but our mission of going frugally will be met. I will share with you in future posts our planning journey and the deals and tips we discover along the way.

So what is your big dream? How will you go about reaching it? Is living frugal part of it? Post your comments and replies.
